Tell us a little bit about the Lancaster Cancer Center. What do you do? What are you best known for?
Lancaster Cancer Center is a physician-owned medical practice specializing in oncology and hematology. Our vision is to provide meticulous, uncompromising, medical oncology care as well as integrative support services and educational programs to meet the needs of our patients. We are committed to honor those we have the privilege of serving in both body and spirit.
When and how did Lancaster Cancer Center start? How has it grown? How many employees do you currently have?
Started in 1975 by Dr. H. Peter DeGreen as a solo-practice, Lancaster Cancer Center has grown, requiring successively larger facilities and 3 relocations. Dr. DeGreen had the foresight to add lab facilities and a tremendous team of physicians and staff. The staff now numbers over 40, including five physicians, six oncology/hematology providers, 10 oncology certified nurses, certified lab technicians, a nurse practitioner, certified clinical trials personnel, and certified coding for billing personnel. Of course, all these certifications require lots of education and ongoing certifications.
Our facilities include an in-house lab and chemotherapy administration, dispensing of medicine to patients, a clinical trial division, and our non-profit division - Healing Journey.
Our current challenge has been on the administrative side. During the last month, we have successfully transitioned to electronic medical records. In addition, we have been training for the last 12 months to go paperless. We will see the fruits of both initiatives during the coming years.
Why is the greatest reward in your field?
Through Healing Journey, we sponsor several support groups and a quarterly newsletter. Some upcoming support activities are the Laughter Club, a monthly luncheon at the Press Room for the Pink Hat Club, a quarterly get-together for Look Good Feel Better, two “Angels Among Us” Relay for Life Teams, and Friends of the Journey mentoring program for newly diagnosed cancer patients. All this wouldn’t be possible without the support of many volunteers including two of the doctors’ wives, Dr. DeGreen’s son and daughter-in-law, and many staff members’ time and caring.
Drs. Lena Dumasia and Joan Kane, along with radiologist Dr. Nitin Tanna, will be speakers at a luncheon in honor of breast cancer survivors, and in September we will sponsor our 10th annual family picnic for our patients.
How about you – Tell us about your background and role with Lancaster Cancer Center.
I came to the Center 5 years ago after previous employment as a Practice Administrator for two OB/GYN groups, one in Lancaster and one in Pittsburgh.
Family? Hobbies? Interests? Favorite Vacation Spots?
I have two grown sons, one in Israel with his wife and two children, and the other in Georgia. I miss seeing the grandchildren, but a weekly Skype video-chat is a wonderful tool to keep in touch!
I enjoy making jewelry and an occasional round of golf.
