In 1918, Harry Ness established Harry Ness & Company, while J. Woodrow Seitz established Stambaugh Dorgan in 1948. Stambaugh-Ness began when the two enterprises merged in the mid-90's.
How has it grown? How many employees do you currently have?A heritage of well-planned mergers and acquisitions has spanned more than nine decades of progressive development leading to the current firm structure. This has deliberately maintained "small firm," personalized responsiveness while gaining "large firm" capabilities through the expert combining of specialized staff and quality resources.
Stambaugh Ness has a total of 75 employees. The main office is located in York, and our second office is in Hanover. The firm serves the Central Pennsylvania and Northern Maryland region and is expanding services into the Mid-Atlantic region.
Why is your company so successful?
Our staff is continually trained and encouraged to approach our clients’ challenges in innovative ways. We are consistently pro-active in our approach to problem-solving and in our understanding of, and interaction with, the business environment we all share. Our early adoption of social media is demonstrative of our dedication to “leading” our clients and educating them in the benefits of innovation.
What is the greatest reward in your field? Greatest challenge?
The greatest reward is the opportunity to help our clients in ways in which they may not even yet know they need our support; and that is also the greatest challenge. It keeps us on our toes.
What do you like about doing business in this area? How does your company participate in the community?
We very much enjoy serving the same people and companies that we consider to be our most “immediate” family. In addition to a number of company sponsorships of area organizations, we consistently inform our employees of volunteer opportunities that come our way. We encourage them to become active volunteers.
What makes your company a great employer?
We are very forward-thinking, and we try to provide a life-work balance that enhances our employees’ time with us. We update our policies to include flex-time, business casual dress and other progressive initiatives that keep us competitive. We even have a “suggestion box” process that documents and encourages follow-up steps needed on any internal improvements and enhancements they may think of. We offer rewards for participation in this program and for their successful suggestions that save the company time and/or money.
We also document and provide a fun incentive program for employees’ perceptions of any situation, opportunity or concern that leads to Stambaugh-Ness providing services to our clients. We teach our employees to detect when our clients may need our help – often before the clients become aware of their need of our unique expertise. We teach them how to educate our clients.
